Stat Block: New Caldera Recon Patrol

Anyone coming within a hundred miles of New Caldera is likely to encounter one of their pro-human patrols. The long-range patrols tend to be the most lenient when it comes to non-humans and Breach Creatures so that they may maintain their cover as travelers and drifters. If a member of this unit is interacting with a non-human, it is because they are gathering intelligence and evaluating the threat level posed by the other party.

The New Caldera long-range reconnaissance patrols primary purpose is to identify and evaluate potential major threats before they make their way into the city-state's territory. Each of the six members of the six active units is chosen for their skill in stealth, survival, and analytical skills. While some may have an all-terrain vehicle available, most travel on foot or horseback, making it easier to blend in with locals. Typically, five of the six active units are in the field at any given time, but all return home once or twice a year to submit intelligence reports and undergo "psychological evaluation" to determine fitness to return to active duty.

Each unit is unique in their equipment in order to better blend in, but all possess the same, singular purpose: identify, evaluate, and report threats to New Caldera in the surrounding regions. The unit is led by an officer of Master Chief or higher rank. Second in command is a Chief Second and the remaining members of the unit rank as any one of Nomad, Wayfarer, or Drifter (listed highest to lowest rank).

"Irrevocable Contamination"

It is rare at this stage of dedication to New Caldera, but there are some that find themselves questioning the dogma of New Caldera's leadership and their psychological evaluation is designed to ferret out doubts and "re-educate" soldiers. Those that fail are deemed irrevocably contaminated and discharged from active duty. The "retiree" is allowed to remain in New Caldera, where they can be watched carefully for seditious or rebellious behavior, but many choose to leave New Caldera altogether out of fear of retribution.
